A route that can change. Shared vans run a fixed itinerary because thirteen other people booked it. A private guide can swap a long hike for a short one when it is obvious the group has had enough, wait out a squall, or start an hour earlier to reach the river before anyone else does.

Pace. A shared tour moves at the speed of its most cautious participant. That is not a criticism — it is how groups work — but if you hike fast, or slowly, it is the main thing you are escaping.

Where it does not pay

For two reasonably fit adults on a fine day, a well-rated shared tour delivers nearly the same day for a fraction of the money, and the small-group operators in this catalogue cap numbers anyway. The highest-rated tour here runs small groups by policy at $40 a head.
