The morning runs along the north coast with commentary, stops at the Luquillo food market for fresh fruit, then heads into El Yunque. The forest section is the full adventure rather than a viewpoint: a hike with river crossings to a hidden pool with waterfalls, the natural rock waterslide, a rope swing and jumps from the rock formations, with the fruit handed round afterwards.

Then dinner at a local restaurant — the cost is not included — and on to Laguna Grande as the light goes. You kayak out through the red mangrove channel to the open lagoon, where the dinoflagellates light up in the water around the paddle. Guides carry lifeguard, CPR and first-aid certification, and all the training and equipment for both halves is included.

Judge it on stamina rather than price. At $184 it is the most expensive of the eight tours compared on this site, and at twelve hours with moderate-to-strenuous rainforest terrain followed by an evening paddle, it asks for an active traveller in good condition. Bio bay brightness also depends on the moon: a dark, moonless night shows far more than a full moon does.

Good to Know & Caveats

• Twelve hours end to end, finishing after dark — plan the next morning accordingly.
• Difficulty is moderate to strenuous; the rainforest terrain is muddy, slippery and uneven, with river-wading, large rocks and steep inclines.
• Bioluminescence is brightest on dark nights — a full moon washes much of it out, and no operator can promise a given level of glow.
• Items can be left in the vehicle during both the rainforest and bio bay sections.
• The tour runs in English, with fully bilingual guides who translate into Spanish as needed.
• There is a 243 lb (110 kg) participant limit, and it is not suitable for guests over 70.
